The word "Polynous", in ancient Greek,
would literally mean "many thoughts", which is a concise description of
what is happening within our very defined, disciplined, and controlled
investment
process. We believe that the only responsible investment approach is
to first gain a comprehensive understanding of each company under
consideration during our company research, and then to only invest in
those companies which meet our research criteria when they are selling
at inexpensive valuations. As such, we are continually employing "many
thoughts" as we analyze the economic environment, industry
characteristics, company strengths and weaknesses, and appropriate
valuation assumptions.
We believe this process differs substantially
from many approaches which are either quite general with their emphasis
on things such as concepts, themes, or momentum, or quite binary in
using individual criteria for making decisions such as quarterly
earnings per share comparisons or comparable store sales statistics. Our
primary objective with the Polynous approach is to only make investments
when we have added significant value analytically but, at a minimum, we
believe our process gives us much more knowledge about our investments
than is typically the case.
